There are plenty of idyllic and serene places to call home in the United States. Factors like parks, a laid back feel, recreation, and scenic views rank high on the list of things that bring peace to residents. There are gems of all sizes and across all regions of the U.S., but a few stand out for a combination of open spaces, low noise, and general tranquility of the residents who live there.

According to data collected and analyzed by Insider Monkey, Fort Collins, Colorado earned the top spot of most peaceful place to live in the United States. This was largely based on a low noise volume, even though nearby Boulder, Colorado had more access to green space and took the #2 spot. Ann Arbor, Michigan earned #3 and is home to fun festivals that bring residents together as well as welcome visitors each year.

Fort Collins, Colorado

Residents of Fort Collins enjoy plenty of art, music, and a good brew.
  1. Art and Music - Fort Collins supports the arts and creative endeavors, whether it’s through public art installations like the painted pianos placed all around town or one of the many concert venues, large and small. Culinary arts are also in full swing with fun and inventive restaurants. Residents can feel a strong sense of connection to their creative and intellectual sides in Fort Collins just by strolling through the historic Old Town area. This sense of history combined with art and creativity does a lot to foster a peaceful atmosphere.

Craft Breweries - The New Belgium Brewing Company is one of the best known craft breweries that calls Fort Collins home, but there are plenty of other options for residents to enjoy a cold one with friends and family. Many breweries offer tours, partner with restaurants and food trucks to create pairings, and host special events. This sense of fun brings residents together for a relaxing time, both inside and outside. 
  3. Outdoor Adventures - With its location close to the Rocky Mountains, there are plenty of picturesque vistas for residents to enjoy. Hiking and biking trails wind throughout Fort Collins and the surrounding area. With so much access to nature and green spaces, it’s not surprising that residents feel at peace in their city. There is also a large water reservoir that is perfect for boating, fishing, and other water activities. With mountains, trails, and water, there’s something for everyone to enjoy outside.

Boulder, Colorado

This Colorado city has been a peaceful place for residents for decades.
  1. Health and Wellness - Boulder is known for being a very fit city and staying healthy is a big part of living a peaceful life. In 2017, Boulder was also ranked the happiest city in the U.S., a mindset which also helps the residents achieve a very peaceful state of being. Health food brands dominate the local economy and are very popular on grocery store shelves. Overall, the city’s residents focus on health and wellbeing, both mentally and physically.
  2. Spending Time Outdoors - The Rocky Mountains provide the perfect place to enjoy time outside, whether it’s enjoying one of the many walking trails or bike paths. Biking is a way of life in Boulder and the entire city makes way with dedicated paths, bike parking, and even bikes for rent around the city. Sandstone rock formations called The Flatirons are also a popular fixture in Boulder, where residents can hike and explore in nature. The Colorado Chautauqua is a historic retreat area with lodging, hiking trails, and shared meeting spaces where people can enjoy time away from the hustle and bustle. 
  3. Peace and Love - Boulder in the 1970s attracted people who embraced a slower, peaceful lifestyle and much of the city’s culture still tends toward hippy. The University of Colorado in Boulder brings new ideas and keeps the city open minded, while many residents are passionate about social justice and rights. Even many of the businesses based in Boulder are certified B-Corps, which means they act with responsibility toward the environment, society, and other areas of impact. Boulder is a place where you can feel at peace being just who you are in a community that supports you.

Ann Arbor, Michigan

This charming college town has a strong sense of community.
  1. Education Capital of the Midwest - As the home of the University of Michigan, education is a top priority for many Ann Arbor residents. Even those who aren’t affiliated with the University directly cheer on the teams and get to enjoy amenities like the renowned University of Michigan Museum of Art for free. There is also plenty of open space for walking on campus as well as around Ann Arbor in general. This access to outdoor space helps residents connect with nature and increases their sense of peace.
  2. Downtown Ann Arbor - With a busier feel, the downtown part of Ann Arbor helps communities come together. Main Street has boutiques for shopping, independent bookstores and art galleries, as well as plenty of trendy restaurants. There are also special events like the farmers market, youth art month, and more. The sidewalks are great for strolling and let visitors take in all that Ann Arbor has to offer. Residents take pride in their city, which is highlighted through artwork and festivals.
  3. Safe Community - Ann Arbor also ranked on the list of safest cities in 2025 based on crime statistics. Residents don’t need to worry too much about their safety, since crime is low and any problems are handled promptly and professionally. This contributes to an overall sense of wellbeing and security. It’s hard to be at peace when crime is rampant, but fortunately that doesn’t affect Ann Arbor very much.
