Which city is home to the United States’ most recent UNESCO Heritage Site?

Presents, of course, are the best part of Christmas. But the second is tradition. It's a time designated for making memories, which makes it the best time of the year to travel.

Whether you’re looking for an idyllic winter wonderland or a unique experience to enjoy with loved ones, these 15 towns offer unforgettable ways to celebrate the season.

Leavenworth, WA

This picturesque town in the Cascade Mountains was modeled after a traditional German village, with old-world Bavarian buildings that are decorated to the nines through December.

What to Do

Christmas Lighting Festival Every December, Leavenworth’s downtown is adorned with over 500,000 Christmas lights, with special lighting festivals taking place every Saturday and Sunday night. Experience the atmosphere of Bavarian village, and shop for unique holiday gifts.

Where to Eat 

Andreas Keller Restaurant, this family-owned restaurant is said to have the best schnitzel in town, served in a traditional German tavern. You can also check out Watershed Cafe, cozy farm-to-table dining with seasonal flavors, and Leavenworth Sausage Garten, perfect for bratwurst and mulled wine outdoors.

Bavarian Lodge Each of the Bavarian Lodge’s 16 rooms are outfitted with fine German and Austrian antiques. Prices start at $336 in December, but are subject to change. If you prefer something more luxurious you can check out Icicle Village Resort which has cozy rooms and a spa for relaxation.

Kauai, Hawaii

If you want some holiday cheer minus the snow, Kauai is a great bet. The most lush of the Hawaiian islands, Kauai hosts festive events from Thanksgiving through New Year's.

What to Do

Kauai Festival of Lights Lihue’s historic County Building gets the full Christmas treatment every December, with a stunning light display that has drawn visitors for over 30 years. Enjoy a festive Holiday Craft Fair or the Festival of Lights in Lihue.

Where to Eat 

Kōkeʻe Lodge, located in a state park, this landmark property is a short drive from the chain resorts on Kauai’s coast, but offers a more authentic taste of the island.  If you want to have your Christmas dinner while enjoying the sound of the sea, visit The Beach House,

Sheraton Kauai Resort, his well-appointed property gets high marks from travelers for its wide range of amenities and a fantastic location right on the water. Starting at $333, or you can check out Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort & Spa for a more luxurious stay. 

Santa Fe, New Mexico

Santa Fe’s Pueblo-style architecture is even more magical at Christmas time, and is the site of one of the country’s most unique holiday traditions

What to Do

Christmas Eve Farolito Walk  instead of Christmas lights, downtown Santa Fe gets decorated with farolitos, small paper bags filled with tea candles. Thousands of visitors descend on Canyon Road every year to witness the mesmerizing display. If you are a fan of snow activities,you can go skiing at Ski Santa Fe or snowshoeing in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains.

Where to Eat

Geronimo, this fine dining restaurant serves a creative, meat-forward menu, in an impeccably redesigned adobe from 1756. Furthermore, if you want to spice up your Christmas,  there is The Shed which is famous for authentic New Mexican cuisine, like red chile enchiladas.

Where to Stay

Inn of the Turquoise Bear This hotel features quintessential Santa Fe architecture, with fireplaces in some rooms. For more historic hotels with holiday vibes and central location choose La Fonda on the Plaza.

St. Augustine, Florida

America’s oldest city doesn’t skimp when it comes to Christmas, featuring trees and lights on every stretch of its Colonial-era streets. 

What to Do

Night of Lights From Thanksgiving until January, St. Augustine’s cobblestone downtown sparkles like a diamond, decorated in millions of tiny white lights. You can also visit the historic Castillo de San Marcos or take a festive trolley ride through the decorated streets.

Where to Eat

Old City House Inn & Restaurant Chef Juan Solano’s menu of inventive Latin and Mediterranean dishes is presented in a romantic 18th-century inn. Since it probably won’t be that cold, you can check out  Harry’s Seafood Bar & Grille, outdoor dining with views of the holiday-lit streets so you can enjoy that Christmas spirit.

The Collector Luxury Inn & Gardens, this luxurious boutique hotel is housed along 9 300-year-old buildings in the heart of downtown St. Augustine. If you prefer luxurious combined with history, stay at Casa Monica Resort & Spa, where there is plenty of festive atmosphere.

Solvang, California

Nestled in the heart of central California wine country, Solvang looks straight out of a Hans Christian Andersen fairytale. 

What to Do

Julefest Parade A central California tradition, the Solvang Julefest Parade features over 400 extravagant floats, musicians, and holiday characters. Visit Santa’s Village with your kids or enjoy festive wine tastings at local wineries or you can walk the charming streets of this Danish-style village, decorated with holiday lights and decor.

Where to Eat

Hitching Post II, this smoky steakhouse is a local institution, with a fantastic filet mignon and a welcoming bar that was forever immortalized in the movie “Sideways”. If you are into the Danish theme then eat at Solvang Restaurant where gløgg (hot spiced wine) is served. This restaurant is currently rated 4 based on 532 reviews on Tripadvisor.

The Landsby, this contemporary boutique hotel features an airy Scandinavian design. Another accommodation that is cozy and affordable is Vinland Hotel & Lounge, perfect for enjoying the Christmas charm.

Branson, Missouri

Branson’s Ozark Mountain Christmas festival is among the country’s most celebrated holiday events, earning Branson the name of “America’s Christmas Tree City”.

What to Do 

An Old Time Christmas at Silver Dollar City Silver Dollar City, Branson’s 1880s-themed amusement park, goes all out for Christmas, featuring Broadway-style holiday shows and jaw-dropping light displays featuring over 6.5 million individual lights. Day passes start at $65.

Branson Dinner Cruise, modeled after a classic riverboat, the Branson Belle offers exceptional views of Table Rock Lake, and holiday-themed dinners during the holidays. You can also check out Farmhouse Restaurant, known for hearty, homestyle meals and festive holiday décor.

Lodge of the Ozarks, located in the heart of Branson, this rustic lodge features a grand wood lobby and homey rooms for a good price. There is also Chateau on the Lake Resort, a luxurious lakeside resort offering stunning views and holiday-themed activities.

New Orleans, Louisiana

There are countless reasons to love New Orleans, not least of which is that it’s a great Christmas city. It’s less touristy and even more beautiful than usual, decorated with some of the country’s most extravagant decorations. 

What to Do 

Celebration in the Oaks, City Park transforms into a winter wonderland around the holidays, its famous oak trees sparkling with one of the country’s grandest holiday lights displays. Enjoy the Bonfires on the Levee, a unique Louisiana Christmas tradition with bonfires lighting up the Mississippi River levee.

Commanders Palace, this New Orleans establishment has been around since the 1880s, with a pricey menu of Creole classics that’s worth the splurge. For coffee and breakfast visit Cafe du Monde and enjoy classic New Orleans treats

Newport, Rhode Island

Newport’s Gilded Age mansions are their most majestic during Christmas.

What to Do 

The Breakers, the summer residence of Cornelius Vanderbilt II, The Breakers is Newport’s grandest mansion, and boasts appropriately opulent decorations at Christmas. Attend the Holiday Boat Parade in the harbor, where decorated boats light up the water with festive cheer.

The Black Pearl Located on Bannisters Wharf, the Black Pearl serves elevated takes on classic New England food. For more sea atmosphere and food, visit The Mooring where you can organize your Christmas dinner and enjoy a festive ambiance.

Castle Hill Inn, this luxurious Victorian hotel enjoys the best location in Newport, sitting atop its own peninsula in Narragansett Bay. Rates start at $620. Gurney’s Newport Resort & Marina, is a waterfront resort with beautiful holiday decorations, perfect for a relaxing Christmas getaway.

Nantucket, Massachusetts

This beloved island off the coast of Cape Cod is known as a summer destination, but it’s even prettier during Christmas.

What to Do

Christmas Stroll. This week-long calendar of events includes live entertainment downtown, special gifts and parties at local shops, and carriage rides down Nantucket’s cobblestone Main Street. Attend the Nantucket Noel festival, with holiday parades, tree lightings, and festive shopping in the town's historic district.

Nantucket Tap Room, this upscale American eatery in the landmark Jared Coffin House features a fantastic beer and wine list. If you are looking for a classic spot for a Christmas dinner overlooking the harbor, with elegant decor and seasonal dishes then Brant Point Grill is a place for you.

The Nantucket Hotel Nantucket’s premiere hotel is located just steps from the cobblestone streets of the historic Brant Point neighborhood. Rates start at $400. There is also The White Elephant, a luxurious, waterfront property offering cozy rooms and a festive atmosphere during the holidays.

Bethlehem, Pennsylvania

Founded on Christmas Day in 1741, the town of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania has good reason to be called America’s “Christmas City”. It doesn’t take that title lightly. 

What to Do 

Christkindlmarkt, every year more than 150 artisans gather for this European-style holiday market, which features an 81-foot steel star shining down on downtown, carolers, and festive holiday eats. Enjoy a holiday concert or performance at the Sands Bethlehem Event Center or SteelStacks.

Bolete, this rustic yet elegant eatery features a locally sourced menu that changes daily. If you are a bookworm, visit Moravian Book Shop Café for a light meal or coffee in the world’s oldest continuously operating bookstore.

Historic Hotel Bethlehem, this old-word hotel sits right next to the Moravian Church Settlements, the United States’ newest UNESCO World Heritage Site. Rates start at $309. If you are more into the cozy, historic atmosphere check out The Sayre Mansion, a charming bed-and-breakfast.
